Chapter 01
In the middle of the night, a tiny creature jumps off of a tower. A girl rushes after it. Cornering it, she quickly takes a tiny key and begins to chant. The key transforms into a wand. She takes a card, The Windy, and with the aid of the wind, the tiny creature is returned in card form.
Sakura wakes up, hearing the television. Kero, a creature that looks like a stuffed animal, watches it adoringly. He waits until he sees his face and mentions how cool he looks. Sakura, in her haste of getting ready for school, stops and ejects the tape, telling the whining Kero, that she has to give it back to Tomoyo. Tomoyo had made the tape of Sakura capturing the tiny creature, but it's not movie magic, as Sakura explains, it's real.
Sakura lives with her father and her brother. Her mother died when she was three. Her father just hands Sakura her breakfast when Touya, Sakura's brother, announces that he's ready to leave for school. Shocked at this statment, Sakura rushes through her food, puts on her rollar blades and dashes out to catch up with Touya. He observes her, asking if it's okay if she leaves a little later. She doesn't answer, but immediately blushes in embarrassment when she spots Touya's friend, Yukito. Yukito is worried about Sakura not having enough sleep. Her school comes into view and she stops. Touya and Yukito (on Touya's bike) ride along to their highschool, which is next to the elementary school. Just before they disappear, Yukito tosses Sakura a piece of candy. She catches it in a daze, admiring him.
Tomoyo, who had witnessed the entire thing mentions how smooth he was. She thanks Tomoyo for the tape. Tomoyo goes into a dramatic speech about how brave Sakura is for catching the Clow Cards and saving the world from eminent disaster.
Sakura explains that two months ago, around the time when she just started the fourth grade, she found the Clow Book in her dad's library. Kero, as she affectionately calls him (Keroberos is his real name), appeared from the cover the book - he was the guardian seal of the book. The first time Kero came out of the book, Sakura was freaked out, looking wildly for a "switch" to turn him off. He explains that he's the guardian of the seal of the Clow Book, but when he opens it, the cards are gone. He goes into furthur explanation on the cards themselves. He explained that Clow Reed was a powerful sorcerer who created the cards. Each card has its own personality, power, and name. In order to control them, he created the Clow Book and sealed them in, placing Keroberos on the cover itself. In order to break the seal, one needs magic, and since Sakura opened it, Kero assumes she has a bit of magic in her. Kero then brings the key of the seal to her, and thus she became the cardcaptor.
Now that she thinks about it, Sakura believes that Kero tricked her into being the cardcaptor. Tomoyo tells her it isn't so, and she believes that Sakura is amazing. She has already decided that she'll make commemorative videos of Sakura's captures. With that in mind, she's set on creating various costumes for Sakura because she believes that when one does something special, they should weark special clothes.
In gym class, Sakura makes a perfect jump over a stack of compartments. Next to them, in the highschool soccer field, Touya steals the ball away from the opposing team. The highschool girls shriek. Sakura frowns, wondering why their athletic field needs to be next to her school's athletic field. Suddenly, she spots Yukito and wishes that Touya wasn't in the way. Yukito, seeing Sakura at the fence, runs up to it and trips and falls. Coming to his aid, Touya checks to make sure that Yukito is all right, and then noticing Sakura, stretches Yukito's face mischieviously.
Just then, a large bird is seen overhead, giving off a huge gust. Seeing the enormous bird, which is larger than any bird Sakura has ever seen, she realizes that it must be a Clow Card.
