Chapter 001: The Sealed Away Boy

InuYasha hops through a burning village, stealing the Shikon no Tama. With it in his possession, he believes that he can become a full demon. However, just as he's making his escape, a priestess named Kikyo binds him to a tree with her arrow. She's badly injured. Her sister, Kaede, comes to her aid, but it's already too late. As her last request, Kikyo asks that the Shikon no Tama be burned with her, so others will not have to share her same fate.

Kagome is sitting in a shrine with her grandfather in Tokyo, 1997. Before he goes into a long winded explanation on the history of the Shikon no Tama, Kagome asks him if he knows what the next day is. He happily gives her an early birthday present. Opening it, she finds (much to her dislike) a mummified kappa hand.

Kagome lives at a very old shrine with her mother, her grandfather, and her younger brother. In the vicinity, there's a large sacred tree and a concealed well. She doesn't understand why she can't remember any of the history, despite her grandfather constantly telling about the history of everything.

Just as Kagome is about to leave for school the next day, her little appears behind the door where the concealed well is kept. He looks distressed, telling Kagome that Buyo, their cat, has disappeared inside the small shrine. They hear a noise and Kagome decides to investigate, thinking the noise came from the cat. She realizes the sounds are coming from inside the well, which is impossible because it's been tightly shut. Kagome screams, feeling Buyo rub against her leg. Picking him up and preparing to leave, the well bursts open and a centipede demon thrusts her into the well.

As they dive furthur into the well, the demon's body slowly begins to regenerate. The demon accuses Kagome of having something, and licks her face. In disgust, Kagome pushes the demon off of her. Just before the demon disappears completely, she tells Kagome that she won't let the Shikon no Tama get away.

Kagome falls on the ground of the well. She thinks that perhaps she just dreamed of the events, but then she tries to remember where she heard the term Shikon no Tama from. Realizing that Souta is no longer in the shrine with her, she begins her climb out of the well. Confused to see the outside, she continues through a forest, trying to find her house. Excited to see the sacred tree, she runs toward it and stops when she spots InuYasha, asleep and pinned to it. Kagome, thinking that he's just a regular boy, goes up to him, inspecting him. She spots his dog ears and squeezes them. She hangs her head, realizing that it's not the time to be doing things like this. People scream at her and fire arrows. They barely miss her.

Tied up, the people of a village whisper to each other, wondering who Kagome could be. Observing the crowd of people, Kagome realizes that everyone is dressed and acting like they're in the 15th to 16th century Japan. Kaede, the priestess of the village, comes through and inspects Kagome. Surprised, she tells her that she looks like her deceased sister, Kikyo. Kaede takes her into her home, and tells Kagome that it's been fifty years since her sister died. Kagome wonders how she's going to get back home when a dead horse is dropped in front of Kaede's house. Kagome rushes out, seeing the centipede demon. Kagome rushes toward the forest of InuYasha, where the well is after hearing Kaede give out instructions.

InuYasha begins to awaken, muttering about how he can smell the woman that killed him. As Kagome rushes on, she can't help but think that she's going to be saved somehow by something.
