Chapter 003: Those After the Jewel
Kaede warns Kagome to never give up the jewel because a jewel that boosts demon's spiritual powers is an unholy jewel. InuYasha looks threatingly at her, telling her that he won't go easy on her because she "stinks". He lashes out, missing purposely, but still close enough for Kagome to dodge it. The damage he did to the ground is significant - a large crater is now a part of the landscape. Kagome looks shocked, realizing that he's really trying to kill her. The villagers look on, worried. Kaede looks annoyed as she pulls out some beads.
InuYasha begins to attack Kagome again, hitting a tree as Kagome tries to hide behind it. With the blow, she falls to the ground and drops the jewel. Just as he thinks he has Kagome cornered, Kaede throws the necklace onto InuYasha, surprising him. Kaede instructs Kagome to use a word that will "quiet" InuYasha, any word will do, so that he'll be subdued. In hesitation, the only word that Kagome can think of is sit. InuYasha falls in midattack. Confused, he attempts to take them off, but Kaede tells him that it's useless to do because the subjugation beads subdues his powers. In retaliation, he begins to attack Kaede, but she calmly says Kagome's name who then tells him to sit. The villagers look on at InuYasha, who has his face in the ground from his fall, in fascination.
The villagers begin rebuilding after the latest demon attack. Kaede tends to Kagome's wounds, with a crestfallen InuYasha half laying on the floor a few feet away. Kaede tells Kagome that evil beings, not only demons, will come after the jewel, because with it, they will be able to fulfill all of their desires. Intrigued, Kagome asks InuYasha why he wants it. She doesn't understand why he wants it because to her, he's already quite strong. Kaede tells her somberly that it's because he's a half-demon.
InuYasha sits up abruptly, breaking a part of the flooring in his anger. He states that the old woman has been talking about him like she knows her. She looks at him, unsurprised that he doesn't recognize her as Kikyo's younger sister. She tells him that it's been 50 years since he's been sealed to the tree, so she has aged. He looks about, stating that Kikyo must be a total hag as well. Kaede looks at him and states that her sister died the day he was sealed. Playing off his surprise, InuYasha states that it's a relief Kikyo is dead. Kaede tells him that it's still too early for him to be relieved because Kagome must be the reincarnation of Kikyo. Not only do the two look alike, but because Kagome had the Shikon no Tama in her, was the best proof of all, and now, Kagome must protect the jewel.
InuYasha is sitting on the branch of a tree, contemplating how Kagome is Kikyo. A tomato is tossed toward him, and he catches it without looking. Annoyed, he looks down to see Kagome with a pile of food she got as an offering from the villagers. Kagome asks him to come down so the two can eat together. she tries to make him realize that she's not Kikyo, but Kagome. She doesn't understand why he won't be a little bit more friendly toward her. In retaliation, InuYasha stands up, and tells her that he'll show no mercy when it comes to obtaining the Shikon no Tama. Kagome looks on, and says that if he gets violent all she has to say is "sit". She stops and looks down at InuYasha who has fallen on his chest again. She apologizes quickly to him, telling him she didn't mean it.
In the night, Kagome ponders how to get back home. She realizes that it's been two days since she came to the Feudal Era and that her family must be worried by now. With those thoughts, she finds sleep. A demonic crow watches her from a window, lured there by the jewel. A rock is flung toward it, startling it. InuYasha glares as it flies away, flinging another rock toward its escaping figure.
In the morning, Kagome slips out of the village undected, looking for the well that led her to this era in the first place. As she wanders through the forest, she gets kidnapped by a group of bandits. At the time, the villagers just found out that Kagome has gone missing. InuYasa, hearing about this, goes off in search of her. Back at the bandits hideout, Kagome notices that something isn't right about the boss.
